The house is quiet, every tap is closed, nothing is running — and somewhere behind a wall, a thin, steady hiss refuses to stop. Most people first notice it at night, lying in bed, and then cannot stop hearing it. That instinct to pay attention is correct. A hiss is the sound of something escaping through a small opening under pressure, and in a plumbing system with everything off, there should be nothing escaping anywhere. The encouraging news is that the most common cause is also the cheapest one, and you can identify it yourself in minutes. The concerning possibility is a pinhole leak in a pressurized line inside a wall — a leak that can run for weeks before the first stain appears. What a Constant Hiss Means — and What It Doesn't
A steady hiss is turbulence: water forced through a small restriction under pressure. That is different from your plumbing’s normal vocabulary. Water hammer is a bang or thud when a valve closes fast — abrupt and momentary. Expansion ticking is the light click of hot-water pipes warming or cooling against their fasteners, and it fades within minutes of using hot water. A hiss that continues indefinitely with every fixture closed fits neither. Something in the pressurized system is passing water continuously: a fixture valve that never quite seals, a pressure-reducing valve working hard or failing, or an actual hole in a pipe. If the hiss comes with any gas odour, leave the house and call your gas utility first — that is a different problem entirely.
The Three Usual Suspects, Ranked Honestly
First, and most common by far: a running fixture. A worn flapper in a tank-style fixture lets water seep from tank to bowl continuously, and the refill hiss can carry surprisingly far through pipes at night. Then listen comparatively: is the hiss loudest at the PRV by the main shutoff, at a particular fixture, or along a particular wall? Finally, touch-test the suspect wall — unexplained warmth suggests a hot-water line leaking behind it, and cool dampness speaks for itself. Pinhole leaks are not random bad luck. Much of BC’s older housing stock was plumbed in copper, and the soft, slightly acidic water common on the coast can slowly dissolve copper from the inside, thinning the pipe wall until a pin-sized opening breaks through — often at bends and joints where water moves fastest.
