On a long buried main or a sprawling pipe network, listening at a single point isn’t enough — you need to know where, to the metre, before you dig. Leak-noise correlation does exactly that. AnyLeak.ca uses correlation and data logging across British Columbia to compute the position of a leak between two sensors, so excavation lands on the leak the first time. It is one of the most precise tools in our advanced detection toolkit.
How correlation works
Two sensors are placed on the pipe on either side of a suspected leak. The leak sound reaches each sensor at slightly different times; combined with the known distance and the sound velocity for that pipe material, the correlator calculates the leak’s position. It works on metal and, with the right technique, on plastic (PE/poly, PVC) mains that are too quiet for simple listening. It complements acoustic detection and underground line location.
Overnight noise logging
For larger networks, noise loggers are deployed along the system and left to record — often overnight, when demand is low and a leak’s steady sound stands out. The data narrows which sections are leaking before correlation pinpoints the exact spot, which is efficient on campuses, municipal systems and large strata sites.
